Too Tired all the Time (TTT)
How many of us have felt like this at some point in our lives!
This is the checklist we run through with customers when they come in to see if they can find a solution.
Water – if you are dehydrated you will feel rotten and it can affect concentration and make you feel more tired and hassled.
Sugar and caffeine – These will really pick you up and give you a lift but it’s the car equivalent in doing 50km an hour in first gear. Your peanut butter on soda bread would be a much better snack for sustaining energy. Fizzy drinks are really bad, do not have these daily!
Alcohol – We love a glass of wine to relax and chill with friends (and mothers) but it’s not a good long-term strategy for stress or anything else. If you feel you are doing too much you are.
A classic stressed liver from living the high life causes sleep (they say between 1-3am) and digestive problems at the very least. Get thee some milk thistle*, we like A. Vogel's Milk Thistle Complex and cut the hooch.
*Do check that milk thistle is safe for you to use before you buy.
Stress, Fear and Depression – No brainer there but these guys are exhausting! If you are feeling like this you need to do something about it. Go to your doctor, seek out a qualified talk therapist, meditate, anything to start to getting well again and most importantly believe that this feels dreadful but will pass!
Anaemia – If you are vegan or vegetarian, pregnant or breastfeeding, have a restricted diet or just a bad one, you don’t eat green veg or do have digestion problems, you should consider going to your doctor and getting your blood levels checked for Iron, Folic acid and Vitamin B12. Anaemia is malnutrition and a common cause of fatigue and an overwhelmed immune system.
Thyroid Problems – Again this would be something to rule out with your doctor. It’s a metabolic disorder that can cause tiredness, depression, hair loss, overheating or/and the opposite and digestive problems.
Medication – can make you feel tired. Ask your pharmacist for advice if you think your meds are causing your fatigue and ask for a review if you are on a lot of different medication.
A supplement like CoQ10 or Revive Active is often taken by people on statins (the medication for high cholesterol) to counteract this side effect.
Exercise – It works. Just try to do a little, 20mins to start, every day and make it outside.
Sleep – We often fool ourselves into thinking that we don’t need it, that hours of lounging in front of a screen counts as rest, your brain begs to differ. Check out this link.
Shift Work is very hard on the body. If the world was perfect you wouldn’t have to do it.
Sleep well and for as many hours as your poor bones need.
Make sure you are not too hot in bed, try sleeping with as little as possible (just a sheet and blanket for one night to see how you get on). Ideally your bedroom should be well ventilated and dust free.
